Cecil W. Rector, Jr. Obituary
Cecil W. Rector, 79, of New London died Tuesday, October 10, 2006. He was the husband of Marguerite Nieweg Rector, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage and was preceded in death by their daughter, Mardeen E. Rector and a brother, Ernest Rector. He is also survived by three sons, Clint, Tim and Dana Rector; two daughters, Sandi Bunker and Betsy Beehler; three sisters Jean Pratt, Hazel Hairsine and Nancy Yerkes. He leaves behind a large, loving family who was proud to call him dad, brother and poppy.

Cecil was born in Kennett Square and was a graduate of the Kennett High School Class of 1946. He loved all sports and played just about all offered by the school. He was captain of the baseball, soccer and volleyball teams, receiving the Most Valuable Athlete Award of 1946. He continued his love of baseball by playing in community leagues in Russellville, Cochranville, New London and Oxford. He was inducted into the Kennett Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. Cecil took a lot of satisfaction in his accomplishments as a ballplayer but nothing compared to his pride as a family man.

Cecil’s family meant everything to him. He was the proud father of 6 children, 16 grandchildren, and 8 great-grand children. He was kind and gentle and quick to give praise for the smallest accomplishment. His love of sports followed through to his family. He not only followed each child and grandchild’s sports endeavors but also could be found at many of their games watching proudly from the sidelines. He will truly be missed as the foundation of this large, cohesive and loving family.

Cecil worked for 60 years retiring at the age of 78. He spent most of that time working in the mushroom industry, 25 of which he owned his own trucking company.

Cecil loved his community, where he lived for the past 56 years. He spent many hours in his later life taking pictures of our growing community. He was as proud of the history as he was of the progress. He authored two books; New London: A Pictorial History and New London: Now and Then and has created over 75 books of pictures, newspaper clippings and personal memories. He donated many of his personal collection to the Oxford and Avon Grove libraries.

Marguerite and their family celebrated his life with friends at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 at the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home, 86 Pine St., Oxford, PA. Friends and family called from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, October 13, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service on Saturday.

Interment was in the New London Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cecil’s memory may be made to the Avon Grove Scholarship Fund in memory of Cecil W. Rector at P.O. Box 266 West Grove, PA 19390 c/o Cheryl Doyle.
